Enjoying Golf at Strawberry Hill
We have a number of events throughout the year for all members, adults and juniors, from the arguably mad night golf? event in early March, the regular friendly roll-ups on Friday evenings throughout the summer, and our Roll up events, to the slightly more serious club competition for all, the JH Taylor Cup in August. There are also a number of mixed men and women events in the summer months, and the annual knock-out mixed foursomes challenge, a hotly contested competition where ‘sorry partner’ appears to be the most often spoken phrase.
Strawberry Hill boasts a very strong and active women’s section, constituting over 40% of the total membership of the club. Women are represented on both the board of directors and committee which is responsible for the day to day running of the club. One of the most interesting things about the course itself is that men and women play from the same friendly and competition tees, although the par for the course, standard scratch, and stroke indices are different for women. The membership categories for women are exactly the same as for men; full and 5-Day plus.
Full membership gives access to the course at all times, whereas 5-Day plus members are limited to afternoons at weekends, and is slightly cheaper in terms of annual subscription. All women’s competitions are open to members of both categories, with competitions on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays enabling everyone to enter however limited their free time.
The women’s section is run by the Ladies Captain and her committee. In addition to the more serious women’s competitions throughout the year, there are plenty of roll-ups and partners-drawn fun competitions to ensure that all members find it easy to get games.
Most weeks of the year there are group lessons for beginners and improvers run by the club professional, Peter Buchan. You don’t have to be a member to join in these lessons and many of our current members started on our practice range in these sessions.
