Named after Horace Walpole, a defining figure of 18th-century society, literature, art and architecture, this course pays tribute to his enduring legacy. The third son of Sir Robert Walpole - Britain's first Prime Minister - he is best known as the author of The Castle of Otranto, widely regarded as the world's first Gothic novel, and as the creator of Strawberry Hill House, home to his extraordinary collection of treasures.
Waldegrave Course
The Waldegrave Course is played off the yellow tees (holes 1-9) and blue tees (holes 10-18), and is open to visitors, guests, members; casual rounds, and selected competitions.
This course is named after Lady Frances Waldegrave, a prominent figure in Victorian society with with strong ties to Strawberry Hill House. She married John Waldegrave, owner of the house and grandson of Horace Walpole's great-niece, Elizabeth Waldegrave. After John's death in 1840, she later married his brother, George, through whom she inherited Strawberry Hill House. A celebrated hostess, she was renowned for entertaining members of the Royal Family and leading figures of the Liberal establishment at her Twickenham residence.
